Who works there? What keeps them so busy? • For the 2024 season, we relocated all of MacFarlane Pheasants' breeders to Missouri. The three farms we have there are called MoMac, MoPhe, and MoArk. • Shane Smith, our manager at MoPhe, and his staff, renovated a barn at MoPhe in July of 2023 to create an additional breeder space. We are excited to share that the North American Gamebird Association (NAGA) has announced its third annual Hunting Club Conference to be held in Sioux Falls, SD. The conference will be held July 15-17, 2024. This event is highly recommended for anyone who owns, manages, or works at a gamebird hunting preserve. The conference is designed by hunt clubs especially for hunt clubs. The topics that will be presented include increasing profitability, keeping quality birds, protecting your club from AI, threats to the gamebird industry, marketing your preserve, and more! There will be many opportunities to network with other hunt clubs. Folks who attended the first two conferences gave rave reviews, and I’m sure they would tell you that these three days in July 2024 will be well worth your time. This year’s conference is at the beautiful Best Western Plus Ramkota. Registration details are available on line so be sure to link to the site at Hunting Club Conference. Read More »

In the past Gators were used by Farm Management for: • Hauling feeders in and out of pens. • Hauling plassons (bell waterers). • Pulling sprayers for flight pen cover. • Transportation between pens for bird checks. Upkeep on the gators was proving to be too costly. Parts were hard to find and expensive. When gator engines quit we couldn’t buy replacement engines, and used gators were being sold for 8-$10,000. After careful consideration, we decided that the price was not cost-effective for our purposes. Read More »

The Biennial Pheasant Management Seminar is always exciting for us, as we get to meet old and new colleagues and hear some of the best speakers in the business. This year we had 123 guests, 17 from as far away as France, Romania, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Our United States guests came from all over the country, including Wisconsin, Texas, Hawaii, California, New York, Colorado, Utah, North Carolina, Alabama, Minnesota, and Arkansas. The accommodations, the seminar, and the group meals in the surrounding area provided many opportunities for guests to meet and network with colleagues in the pheasant business. The chance to share personal experiences and discuss seminar topics was an integral part of our seminar planning, and there were many relevant topics. We are grateful to our speakers and guests for making this seminar such an exciting and satisfying experience for MacFarlane Pheasants. Read More »

Once our brooding season is complete, we still have work to do at MacFarlane Pheasants. This year’s major off-season projects were deep cleaning, maintenance, and organization. Brian Davis, our Brooder manager, explains our reasoning perfectly. “Deep cleaning adds integrity to our biosecurity plan and helps our equipment run properly. Organization and equipment inventory save people-hours, make us more efficient, and keep us ready if we have an equipment breakdown during the season." Read More »
