A Legacy of Collaboration: Reflections on Bill’s Final Seminar
This year’s International Pheasant Management Seminar marked a meaningful milestone for our team and our industry. While the format looked a little different, the message remained the same as it has been for decades: collaboration drives innovation, and innovation fuels growth.
As this was Bill’s final seminar before retirement, it offered a special opportunity to reflect on how far we have come and the role working together has played in shaping both our farm and the broader game bird industry.
Collaboration Has Always Been Part of Our Story
From the very beginning of MacFarlane Pheasants, collaboration has been part of our history. Whether it was learning from early game rearing schools, importing eggs to improve genetics, working with researchers, traveling to meet producers across the country and overseas, or partnering with customers to solve challenges, our growth has always been built on shared ideas and strong relationships.
Over time, those connections helped spark innovations in production, hatchery expansion, marketing, genetics, and new species that continue to influence our farm today.
How Our Seminars Have Grown Over the Years
Our seminars have reflected that same spirit. What started as small gatherings in the late 1990s has grown into an open and supportive environment where producers are willing to share experiences, discuss challenges, and exchange tricks of the trade.
Watching that evolution has been incredibly rewarding. The willingness of attendees to collaborate, ask questions, and support one another has strengthened not only individual farms but the entire industry.
Innovation Through Shared Ideas
This year’s presentation was a chance to look back at those moments of collaboration that shaped our journey, from working with universities and geneticists to building relationships with customers across North America and beyond. Bill also shared how connections made through travel, industry organizations, and peer-to-peer learning created opportunities that helped drive innovation at every stage of our growth.
We invite you to watch the video below to hear Bill’s reflections and the stories behind many of these milestones. His message serves as both a look back and a reminder of what makes this industry special: people who are willing to share, learn, and grow together.
Thankful for the Connections Along the Way
We are incredibly thankful for the connections we’ve built over the years through our seminars and organizations like NAGA and WGPA. The relationships formed with fellow producers, customers, partners, and friends have played a vital role in our journey, and we are grateful for the collaboration and support that continues to move our industry forward.
Honoring Bill’s Impact
Bill was recognized for the lasting impact he has made on the industry. NAGA presented Bill with a Legacy Appreciation Award, along with a commemorative quilt created by NAGA board members to honor his years of leadership, collaboration, and dedication.
We also heard from several industry leaders who have worked alongside Bill for many years and shared reflections on his influence including:
- Royd Hatt (Hatt’s Ranch) reflected that there is no better word than legacy for what Bill is leaving behind.
- Tim Zindl (Oak Ridge Pheasant Ranch) shared that he was raised to always leave a place better than he found it, and said Bill has certainly done that while setting the standard for the industry.
- James Clark (J. Clark Consulting) reminded us that the best sermons are lived, not preached, and that Bill has truly lived by his example.
Bill’s Lasting Legacy
As this chapter comes to a close, the International Pheasant Management Seminar stands as part of Bill’s lasting legacy.
His commitment to openness, collaboration, and supporting others has shaped not only MacFarlane Pheasants but also the community around us. The foundation he helped build, one centered on sharing knowledge and working together, will continue to guide future generations and ensure that innovation through collaboration remains at the heart of what we do.
