For game bird enthusiasts, hunting preserves, and wildlife managers looking for something truly distinctive, few birds stand out like the Melanistic Mutant Pheasant. With its iridescent green-black plumage, excellent flying ability, and impressive survival instincts, this remarkable bird has become a favorite for both release programs and habitat enhancement projects.

At MacFarlane Pheasants, Melanistic Mutants have been an important part of our breeding program for more than 60 years. First introduced under Don MacFarlane’s leadership in 1960, these beautiful birds remain among our most recognizable and sought-after varieties.

What Is a Melanistic Mutant Pheasant?

Despite its unusual name, the Melanistic Mutant is a pure pheasant breed, not a hybrid or cross.

The term “melanistic” refers to a naturally occurring genetic trait that increases the amount of dark pigmentation in the feathers. Rather than the traditional copper, gold, and brown coloring seen on a Chinese Ringneck, Melanistic Mutants display striking iridescent feathers with shades of deep green, black, and blue that shimmer in the sunlight.

The result is a bird that is both elegant and unmistakable in the field.

A Long History at MacFarlane Pheasants

MacFarlane Pheasants first began breeding Melanistic Mutants in 1960 under the direction of Donald MacFarlane.

Recognizing the unique characteristics and growing interest in these birds, Don added them to the farm’s breeding program, creating a strong genetic foundation that continues today.

Our breeding flock now consists of approximately 1,200 carefully selected birds, allowing us to consistently produce healthy, high-quality Melanistic Mutants for customers across the country.

For generations, we’ve continued to select birds based on health, flight performance, and overall quality, ensuring each new generation meets the standards our customers expect.

Where Did Melanistic Mutants Originate?

Melanistic pheasants originated as a naturally occurring color mutation within ringneck pheasant populations. Rather than displaying the bright copper and gold feathers traditionally associated with pheasants, these birds developed significantly darker plumage due to increased melanin production.

Because the trait proved both stable and visually striking, breeders began selectively breeding these birds, establishing dedicated Melanistic bloodlines that remain popular today.

Their unique appearance continues to make them one of the most recognizable pheasant varieties available.

Why Customers Choose Melanistic Mutants

While their appearance certainly attracts attention, there’s much more to these birds than their beautiful feathers.

Outstanding Appearance

The first thing most people notice is their incredible coloration. Their glossy green-black feathers create an elegant look that stands out in flight and looks especially impressive against fields, prairie grasses, and wooded landscapes.

Many hunting preserves choose Melanistic Mutants simply because they add visual variety to their releases.

Excellent Survival

Melanistic Mutants have earned a reputation for their ability to adapt well after release.

Their darker coloring provides excellent camouflage in many natural environments, helping them blend into wooded areas and heavy cover. Combined with their natural instincts, this makes them a popular choice for habitat improvement projects and long-term release programs.

Strong Flight Characteristics

Like all of the pheasants raised at MacFarlane Pheasants, our Melanistic Mutants are selected for quality and performance.

They are active, athletic birds with strong flying ability, making them an excellent choice for hunting preserves and dog training operations looking for birds that provide an exciting experience in the field.

A Great Addition to Mixed Releases

Many of our customers choose to mix Melanistic Mutants with traditional Chinese Ringneck or Kansas Ringneck pheasants.

The contrast in color creates an attractive, diverse population while maintaining the strong flight performance that hunters appreciate.

Raised with Generations of Experience

Every Melanistic Mutant raised at MacFarlane Pheasants benefits from nearly a century of experience raising game birds.

From breeding and incubation to nutrition and daily management, every stage of the process is designed to produce healthy birds with exceptional quality and performance.
