Feed Vacuum Machine

On May 5, 2011 in General by spope

Every year our pen crew tries their best to time the last deliveries of feed so that when all the mature birds are shipped the feeders are empty. There are so many variables though (e.g. if there is bad weather, the preserves back off on their delivery schedule and we keep the birds for an extra week or two). Certainly the pen manager doesn’t want to have the birds run out of feed. In addition, with the larger capacity feeders we are now using, even when the feed trough is empty and the birds cannot access any feed, there still is up to 25 lbs. of feed in the center of the feeders. With feed at such a premium price, we just can’t afford to waste feed. So this year we rented a commercial grain vacuum machine to empty out the feed that was left in the bottom of the feeders once the birds had all been shipped. The machine worked so well that we now have purchased a used grain vac. So far the crews have “vacuumed up” over 20 tons of feed, which is just incredible.
