Biosecurity Upgrades

On May 13, 2011 in Archive by spope

A few years ago during the “avian influenza” scare, biosecurity was a big topic. Two years ago Ben Lawton, our hatchery manager put together a biosecurity manifesto of sorts that addressed all sorts of areas on our farm where we could make improvements in our biosecurity. Over time we have instituted many (in not most) of Ben’s recommendations. One of Ben’s proposed protocols was to require incoming delivery drivers to wear plastic booties and to spray off the tires of their vehicles with a disinfectant. We have instituted that protocol with incoming deliveries and though there was some initial token resistance – we are getting 100% compliance now. If we can figure a way to keep the Canandian geese from flying over our farm, we’ll really have it made.
