We Need Rain

On July 5, 2011 in General by spope

It hasn’t rained here for about 10 days, and the temperature has been over 80 degrees every day too. Our main production farm has about 6″ to 12″ of topsoil and under the topsoil is sand for several hundred feet. So whenever it doesn’t rain for more than a few days, it gets dry here really fast.

An advantage of having such a sandy farm to raise pheasants is that if it rains a lot, the pens still stay dry – which is better for the health of the pheasants and for their tails. When it’s dry, we bring out our irrigator (we never used it at all in 2010). Our irrigator sprays out 200+ gallons a minute – and we have coverage for most of the acreage on our main farm. It’s amazing how the cover responds to the irrigator and the birds really like it too.
