In the Pheasant World What the Term “Made” Means

On June 29, 2011 in General by spope

Pheasants are quite aggressive animals, and during the age of 8 weeks up to 14 weeks pheasants act out their aggressiveness by picking on each other’s feathers. The pheasant’s tails during those ages are actively growing and the tails are soft and full of blood. When a “bite” is taken out of a young tailfeather, the bite is small, but as the bird grows older and the tail matures – the “bite” gets larger in size.
In our pheasant world, when our birds get past their most aggressive stage and the tail has no “bites” and the tips of the tail are black (showing it was never bitten off) we refer to the tails as “made”.
The cock bird in the picture was hatched on March 7th – meaning the bird was 16 weeks old yesterday. I can see from the picture that the birds tail is “made” as it has a complete fan and the tips of the three king feathers appear to be black (which is very good).
