How the Iceland Volcano Has Affected Us

On April 23, 2010 in General by spope

We are blessed that we have a number of customers in Europe who value our pheasant genetics and purchase our pheasant hatching eggs. We have a good customer base of pheasant farms who want either or Chinese ringneck pheasants or our Manchurian ringneck cross pheasants. In April and May 2010 we’ll ship over 100,000 pheasant eggs to customers in Europe (primarily Ireland, England and Denmark).

This week (the week of April 19th) we had three shipments of eggs scheduled to fly air cargo from Chicago O’Hare to Europe. There are a number of steps required to ship eggs to Europe – in many cases we need an import permit from our customer (for a specific shipment date) plus we need a U.S. Health Certificate signed by a USDA vet (again time sensitive) plus we must coordinate with US Fish and Wildlife and with the airlines of course. All three shipments this week were boxed up (1000’s of each in each shipment) and the airline cargo bookings were confirmed and the health papers filled out. And all three shipments were cancelled by the airlines due to the volcano.

So our hatchery staff unboxed the eggs and the health certificates were discarded and our staff waited. We have bookings confirmed now for all three shipments for early next week. It’s just amazing to me how a volcano in Iceland can affect so much.
