Expensive Pheasant Feed

On September 8, 2009 in General by spope

We are just trying to figure out how to make running a commercial pheasant farm a profitable enterprise.  Demand obviously is down and yet delivery costs, feed costs, virtually all our costs are up.  We can’t raise prices in this market – lot’s of other sellers seem willing to part with their birds for prices we can’t even compete with.  All we can do is take a good hard look at all of our costs and trim where we can.   Right now our country is looking at the biggest corn and soybean crop ever – and commodity prices are back down from the stratospheric levels they have been at.  I truly hope we can find a supplier for our feed that will book our feed needs at reasonable prices.  Even though commodity prices have come way down off their highs – we still are getting quotes for feed that run $100 per ton more than we paid for a ton of feed 2 or 3 years ago.  Why you ask?  We can’t answer that.   What we do know though is that we bought nearly 2000 tons of feed here in 2008 and will again in 2009.  That extra $100 per ton we are paying is a killer.
