MacFarlane Pheasants Inc. produces approximately 1.8 million chicks each year. Nearly 500,000 of those chicks are raised to maturity and bought by clubs, governmental agencies and individuals. They are enjoyed for sport and their tasty meat! The rest of the chicks are sold as chicks or started birds. April Goble’s interview was a delightful look into the life and thoughts of the woman who is the Chick Sales Coordinator at MacFarlane Pheasants. Remember her name because if life goes the way she expects, she will still be here in 30 years. MacFarlane Pheasants ships out about 22,000 “started birds” each year. Started birds are our 6-week old pheasants that can be put directly into outdoor pens when they ar-rive. They are perfect for the person who wants to grow pheasants but does not have the barn setup or time to raise chicks. The Midwest Poultry Consortium Center of Excellence (CEO) benefits students who are interested in strong research-based poultry education. Students from participating sites may take innovative poultry science classes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and take part in internships that will fit into the academic timetable. Credits are transferable to the students’ home university. MacFarlane Pheasants, Inc. is active in the Midwest Poultry Consortium and regularly takes interns at their farm. This summer we welcomed Caroline Greg from Iowa State University and Reilly Hoefker from South Dakota State University. Both students are taking advantage of the University of Wisconsin classes.
